OP-EDS & JOURNALISM
How we train our cops to fear Islam is an investigation into the way American law enforcement are trained in counterterrorism that I carried out and wrote with Meg Stalcup. It was published in the Washington Monthly, and the research was supported by The Nation Institute Investigative Fund. The original is here. This page fills you in on the acrimony and Senate inquiries that followed the publication of the story. 3 March 2011.
In 2006, I was the English-language editor of Café Babel, a multi-lingual European magazine based in Paris. Most of the pieces I wrote during this period have been happily lost in internet space. A couple, I think, are still somewhat worthwhile:
- Kinshasa-Paris: life at the margins of the state (31 July 2006), on the plight of Congolese refugees in Paris.
- Inside Musée Quai Branly: An African Disneyland (26 October 2006), on the folly of Chirac's ethnographic museum in Paris.
